Narewec called for the MRA to conduct an immediate investigation and assessment of the situation. "This is not a new issue; it has been ongoing for over 30 years.” The incident is linked to Mining Lease ML460, where tensions escalated despite previous efforts to resolve disputes. Narewec highlighted that a round table discussion was held several weeks ago at Crossroads Hotel, involving the conflicting parties and the MRA. The meeting produced the following resolutions: 1. The BDC and developer were to halt mining activities. 2. BDC was to supply documents to the MRA. 3. ML482 tributors were to supply documents to the MRA. 4. The MRA was to make a decision on ML460. While the MRA granted a mining license to BDC, which was reflected in the updated mining portal, resolutions 1, 2, and 3 were not executed. The matter involving ML482 has since been taken to court. Narewec expressed regret that some individuals took the law into their own hands, leading to the tragic incident. Digicel Foundation's "BeLit" (Better Literacy) program, aimed at enhancing education through technology, has expanded to Lae City. Over the past two years, the initiative has included a three-hour educational TV program on TVWAN and the establishment of computer labs in six secondary schools in Port Moresby. In the 2024 fiscal year, Digicel Foundation assessed all four high schools in Lae to determine eligibility for computer lab projects, based on criteria such as existing infrastructure, the presence of ICT teachers, and security measures. Lae Secondary School and Busu Secondary School were selected for the project. Busu Secondary School, one of Lae's top-performing institutions with 1,800 students from Grades 9 to 12, had previously received funding for a four-in-one double-storey classroom under Digicel Foundation’s Education Infrastructure Program. The classroom, costing K1.6 million, was completed in December 2022 after delays with the initial contractor. The current project at Busu Secondary involves refurbishing the existing computer lab, including the installation of 20 desktop computers and 20 laptops, replacing outdated equipment. The total investment for this project was K87,539.20. At the launch event, Digicel PNG CEO Tarik Baudiaf emphasized the company's commitment to supporting education, health, and sustainable development across Papua New Guinea. An Asian man was wilfully murdered on Sunday between 11am and 12:30pm midday by a group of aggrieved tributors at Kilolo mine area in Wau Waria District of Morobe province. Tributors is a term that refers to individuals or small groups who are working on mining site under a tribute system, the system allows them to extract minerals from a specific area in exchange for giving a percentage for share of their finds to the mining company or the landowners. Morobe Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Jacob Singura, says the prime suspect, Simon Forfin, led a group of over sixty individuals. The group attacked workers of Wido Mine Limited. The attackers set fire to several machines, including backhoes, and tragically killed the 47-year-old Chinese national, Chemcu Zing. Four mine workers were also wounded in the attack. Two individuals, Xing Zhang Hua, an elderly Chinese national, and Li Xia Yao, another Chinese national, are in critical condition. Singura said the two critically injured men were taken to Angau General Hospital in Lae. The other two workers sustained minor injuries. All the injured have been transported to Lae for further medical treatment. The deceased has yet to be taken to the morgue in Lae, as arrangements are still being made, pending additional manpower support from other police units. Further intelligence reports suggest that the suspects may be armed with firearms, possibly factory-made guns. The armed individuals are believed to be hiding in nearby bushes, monitoring police movements. The prime suspect, Simon Forfin, has not yet been apprehended and is believed to have decamped. However, an accomplice in the killing, a woman who allegedly instigated the attack and is the sister of the ring leader, has been apprehended and interrogated about his whereabouts. The ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital has confirmed that seven people lost their lives in a tragic motor vehicle accident on Saturday, July 6th, near the Erap Bridge in the Huon Gulf district. St John Ambulance was the first to respond to the collision between a 25-seater PMV bus and a 5-door Land cruiser, which occurred at 1 pm along the Highlands Highway. According to ANGAU Hospital Director of Curative Health Services, Dr. Steven James, all seven fatalities were passengers who died on impact. “There were 27 people involved in the accident,” Dr. James reported. “Seven of them died on impact, as confirmed by the ANGAU morgue, while the 20 survivors were taken to the Wampar Health Centre and then directed to ANGAU.” Out of the 20 survivors, nine, including two children, have been admitted to the surgical ward. Six are suffering from head injuries, while three have various fractures. The Morobe Provincial Health Authority has extended its sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones and offered prayers for those recovering from their injuries.

Paula Kaupa, who has been with the secretariat since its inception in 2014, has been studying at the Unitech School of Agriculture and Science since 2022. Reflecting on her journey, Kaupa said that she has been with the secretariat for almost seven years now and has seen made many interactions significantly between 2011 to 2014 in which has motivated her to join the secretariat. Kaupa’s recent presentation highlighted the challenges of population pressure in Greece stating that the higher demand for food leads to increased pressure on arable land. “In coastal areas, there is surplus land, but on the islands, land is scarce." "People are turning to commercial farming to utilize land efficiently.” In addition, she also highlighted the need for comprehensive data on science and technology in Papua New Guinea and pointed out a significant gap in national statistics and STI (Science, Technology, and Innovation) indicators crucial for government planning. “We aim to collect this data as part of the R&D capacity assessment." A fire in which has broken out in the storage shed under the boys’ FBI dormitory areas at Divine Word University, in Madang, has caused shock and concern among the university community. DWU President, Professor, Father Philip Gibbs, shared his initial reactions and outlined the immediate response and ongoing investigation. Fr. Gibbs who was conducting a workshop in Enga Province had received news of the fire via WhatsApp, complete with pictures of the incident as he stated was a shock to him and upon discovering the fire, the university management acted swiftly. “The Dean went to get help from the Security Manager, and they went to alert the Madang fire service." "In the meantime, students tried to douse the fire using buckets with water,” Fr. Gibbs explained. The university's official response is focused on determining the cause of the fire. Fr Gibbs said that they have asked for help from the head of the Madang fire service and are checking to see if there were any witnesses to how the fire started. “The administration is awaiting the fire department's report and is inquiring among security personnel and students for any additional information." "There are no conclusive findings so far.” When asked about potential suspects or motives, particularly regarding possible retaliation from suspended students, Fr.
