A fire destroyed a storage shed at the Rabaul Volcano Observatory after strong winds whipped the fire from a nearby hillside towards the building.

According to reports received by PNG HAUSBUNG from authorities on ground, the fire broke at around 12:00PM.

It is believed the wind whipped a spark of fire onto the building that quickly spread. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the nearby buildings.

The East New Britain Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Chief Superintendent Amanda Kates, reported that the fire services arrived on scene after an hour in which they were able to control the remaining fire from spreading to other buildings.

The storage shed was completely burnt down to ashes including a boat that was kept in the shed. No injuries were reported.

A formal investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire and other necessary or additional findings.

Attempts to reach Rabaul Volcano Observatory Director were unsuccessful as his phone remained off.
