Papua New Guinea’s World Cup dream remains alive despite a narrow 1–0 defeat to New Zealand in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ Oceania Qualifiers final at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.
The Bilums produced a disciplined and determined performance, frustrating the heavily favored Football Ferns for long periods and showcasing the defensive resilience that carried them to the final. Goalkeeper Betty Sam was once again a standout, delivering a string of crucial saves to keep her side in contention.
After holding New Zealand to a goalless first half—despite waves of pressure, near misses off the woodwork, and VAR drama—Papua New Guinea looked increasingly confident of forcing the match deeper into a tense stalemate.
However, the breakthrough came early in the second half when Katie Kitching rose to meet a precise cross from Gabbie Rennie, powering home the decisive header in the 55th minute.
Papua New Guinea continued to battle until the final whistle, limiting further damage and showing composure under pressure, but were unable to find an equalizer.
Despite the loss, their campaign is far from over. The runners-up now turn their attention to the inter-confederation playoffs in December 2026 and February 2027, where they will have another opportunity to secure a historic first FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance.
For New Zealand, the victory seals a dominant qualifying run. The Football Ferns finished the campaign unbeaten, scoring 25 goals without conceding, as they booked their place at a seventh World Cup and now look ahead to Brazil 2027 with confidence.
