NCD LAUNCHES INAUGURAL GOVERNOR’S NETBALL CUP

Port Moresby is making strides in women’s sports with the recent launching of the inaugural Governor’s Netball Cup bringing together young women, community leaders and sporting officials in the nation’s capital.

The event, held as part of NCD’s festive season activities, will see 20 netball teams compete in the first-ever netball edition of the long-running Governor’s Cup.

Speaking at the launch, NCD Governor Powes Parkop expressed gratitude to all participating teams, club owners, managers and players for embracing the initiative, noting that the introduction of netball into the Governor’s Cup reflects the city’s commitment to creating opportunities for women and girls.

“This is the first time netball has been integrated into the Governor’s Cup, and it sends a powerful message that our city belongs to everyone – men and women, boys and girls.”

Netball, described as an almost exclusively women’s sport, was recognized for its role in empowering young women by providing a platform for personal growth, well-being and sporting excellence.

Governor Parkop also highlighted the broader purpose of the competition, stating that the expansion of the Governor’s Cup aligns with Port Moresby’s vision as an inclusive city bringing people from diverse cultures, languages and backgrounds.

“Our city is home to over 1,000 tribes and more than 860 languages. Events such as this help to unite our people through sport, connection and celebration.”

He also announced a commitment of K360,000 towards the tournament, investing in the sport. He hopes that the investment will motivate many individuals to participate in netball.

While only 20 teams have signed up for this year’s competition, organizers are hopeful that this number will increase in the years to come, potentially attracting more teams across the city and Central Province.
