MAGNA CARTA PNG MARKS INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS DAY

More than 20 young volunteers from various sectors gathered on December 5 for a Volunteers Induction Training hosted by Magna Carta PNG Inc. at the Institute of National Affairs, in commemoration of International Volunteer Day.

Welcoming participants, Magna Carta PNG Inc. Program Manager and Human Rights Advocate Ms. Shirley Kaupa acknowledged the vital contributions volunteers make, particularly at the community level.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Every Contribution Matters,” she encouraged the volunteers to uphold the true spirit of volunteerism and to pursue causes aligned with their passions for the betterment of society.

Ms. Kaupa’s remarks were followed by opening comments from Mr. Chan Apakas, Civil Society Coordination and Partnership Coordinator with the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council (CIMC).

He provided an overview of CIMC’s work and highlighted the origins of the Family Sexual Violence Action Committee, which began as a CIMC initiative before transitioning to the Department for Community Development.

The keynote address was delivered by Madam Samantha Bradley, First Secretary for Law and Justice. She described volunteers as “the heartbeat of communities,” noting their willingness to step forward where others may hesitate, meeting challenges with action and demonstrating that meaningful change begins with individuals committed to a purpose greater than themselves.

“International Volunteer Day is more than just a date on the calendar – it is a global recognition of the power of people who give their time, energy and skills to make a difference.”

“Whether supporting human rights, promoting good governance, or helping communities thrive, volunteers are shaping a better future every day in Papua New Guinea.”

Madam Bradley expressed appreciation, on behalf of the Australian High Commission, to Magna Carta PNG Inc. and its partners for organizing the training and bringing young volunteers together.
