HUNTERS LEAD STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE IN A NEW INITIATIVE

Papua New Guinea’s beloved SP PNG Hunters are stepping beyond the rugby league field to deliver a powerful message off it, launching a dedicated Anti-Violence Round in partnership with the South Pacific Brewery’s flagship brand, the SP Lager in Port Moresby.

The initiative will take centre stage this Saturday, 18th April 2026, when the Hunters face the Ipswich Jets at the National Football Stadium, using one of the country’s biggest sporting platforms to spark conversations around respect, safety, and stronger communities.

Backed by South Pacific Brewery’s flagship brand SP Lager, the campaign reinforces a long-standing partnership with the Hunters that dates back to 2013—now focused on tackling one of the nation’s most pressing social issues, domestic violence.

For the match, the Hunters will wear special edition jerseys emblazoned with the campaign’s key messages- "Join the Generation of Change” and “No Excuse for Domestic Violence,” turning the game into more than just a contest—it becomes a call to action.

Speaking at the launch, SP Lager Brand Manager Kitione Amet said the initiative aims to keep the conversation around domestic violence visible and active across communities.

“Rugby league has an unmatched ability to unite families and communities,” Amet said. “Through this partnership with the SP PNG Hunters, we’re using that reach to drive awareness, encourage positive behaviour, and promote meaningful change.”

SP PNG Hunters coach and campaign ambassador Paul Aiton echoed the message, highlighting the club’s core values of faith, family and football, as central to the cause.

“These values guide how we play, how we lead, and how we live,” Aiton said.

“That’s why we’re proud to stand with SP Lager and use our platform to help drive real change.”

He added that the message behind the round is simple but critical.

“Violence has no place in our families, our game, or our country. As Hunters, we want to lead by example—speaking out, supporting awareness, and encouraging safer choices in our communities.”

The Anti-Violence Round reflects a growing recognition of sport’s role in shaping social attitudes in Papua New Guinea, with the Hunters once again demonstrating their influence far beyond the scoreboard.

As the team prepares to run out in front of a home crowd this weekend, the message will be clear: this is more than rugby league—it’s a united stand for change.
