Madang has recorded its first-ever conviction for chewing betel nut (buai) in a public place.
A bank branch manager from Bunabun village was caught chewing betel nut while driving on Modilon Road on the 24th of March. Police saw him at the Vango Road crossing with his window down.
He admitted the offence. He was arrested and charged under the Summary Offences Act 2018. He was released on K400 police bail.
On Tuesday 7th April, the court fined him K400. His bail payment was used to cover the fine. He was cautioned and then released.
Madang Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Robert Baim said the case sets a precedent.
“This is a landmark decision. Chewing buai in public is now an offence and will be enforced. The law protects everyone, no matter their status,” he said.
Baim said the case shows stronger rules for public health and safety in Madang.
