FIBA 2025 MELANESIAN CHAMPIONS RETURN HOME

Papua New Guinea’s national basketball teams arrived home to a heroes’ welcome at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby after a successful campaign at the 2025 FIBA Melanesian Cup in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

The men’s team claimed the gold medal following an unbeaten run that secured their second regional title, while the women’s team proudly brought home silver after a strong performance in the finals.

Family members and fans gathered at the airport to celebrate the teams’ achievements, waving flags and cheering as the players walked out the Jacksons International terminal arrivals reception.

Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) President David Peter praised both teams for their hard work and commitment throughout the tournament.

“We have achieved what we worked for in the Solomon Islands, the men winning gold and the women silver. It’s a great result for basketball in Papua New Guinea,” Peter said.

Looking ahead, President Peter said the focus now shifts to preparations for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.

“We know it’s going to be tough, but our teams will start preparing early to ensure we are ready for June 2027,” he added.

Both teams’ performances have strengthened PNG’s reputation in regional basketball, inspiring confidence and excitement for the sport’s future.
