The NCD Governor’s Independence Nine’s Rugby League tournament has attracted close to 50 teams all around the National Capital District, Hiri-Koiari and Motu-Koita.Governor Powes Parkop launched the tournament on Friday 18 September at the Kone Tigers Rugby League oval with a sponsorship of K200, 000 through a Corporate Funding.Parkop said that the tournament was supposed to be part of the Independence event celebrations but due to so many other events happening during the Independence anniversary celebration week, he decided to have the tournament after Independence.According to NCD Suburban Sports Foundation Chairman – Mr. Billy Aki, this year’s tournament has seen teams coming in from Central province, Motu-Koita villages and all across Port Moresby city, including schoolboys and development teams also participating in the tournament.Aki highlighted that the tournament not only drew in a large number of teams but also exposed fresh young raw talents in the sport. He adds that over the last couple of days since the tournament started, he has his eyes on some of the young talents, especially between the ages of 17 and 20 years old.He further called on the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) to come down and visit such tournaments and identify the potential talents that are free and available for any opportunity they can get with their player pathway programs.Aki says, with the PNG Chiefs entering the NRL in 2028, it has given hope to many of these youngsters that comes from broken homes, abusive backgrounds or other underlying social issues that they have faced in life to take up rugby league, with the hope to better their lives and their future.The tournament completes its round three games today and will head into the finals on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September.

Despite financial and other logistical problems, the FAIRFAX Women’s team overcame setbacks to produce class and poise to outplay power house Vava Gold women’s team to win 3 sets to 1 set, in the Grand-final of the 54th National Indoor volleyball Championships, at the Taurama Aquatic Indoor Complex.In the Men’s grand-final match, NCDVA put on a spirited performance against Champions VAVA taking them right to the ending. Eventually VAVA continued its dominance by escaping with a narrow win 3 set – 2 NCDVA.Patron of the National Indoor Volleyball Championship and Governor for NCD Hon. Powes Parkop, thanked the National Volleyball President and the Executives for hosting a very successful tournament.The Governor further extended his congratulations to the winners and all the teams that participated in this year’s championships, while admitted his lack of committed to the sport as the Patron for more than 10years.Having witnessed the finals, Parkop challenged the Volleyball Executives to try their best to raise the standard of the sport and identify areas where he can step in to support and grow the sport.The Governor even suggested that with more sponsors and funding provided, he would love to have the next national championships aired on live television. He adds that it’s a good television sport and he believes by doing that, the sport will attract more interest and the game will grow.Parkop reiterated on the importance of the NCD Games been recently launched as a platform to mobilize and lure youths around the city to get involved in sports to give themselves a potential brighter future and better citizens in the city and for the country.“We believe that sports is one platform that can contribute greatly to our communities in the city and to our country. It can develop good talent, good character and develop good young men and women to become very positive, dedication, committed and discipline young people to equally contribute to their family, community, our city and to the country,” said Governor Parkop.He further announced that volleyball is one of the sports included in the NCD Games with a K60,000 prize money on offer for the volleyball competition in 2026 NCD Games.

East New Britain Governor Hon. Michael Marum has called on the people of Rabaul to transform the painful memories of the 1994 twin volcanic eruptions into a renewed commitment to local leadership and community development.Speaking at the 32nd anniversary commemorations of the devastating eruptions of Tavurvur and Vulcan on 19 September 1994, Governor Marum emphasized that while the disaster changed Rabaul forever, it did not diminish the resilience and determination of its people.“The volcanoes destroyed homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, but they did not destroy the spirit of Rabaul,” Governor Marum stated.He urged the community to view the anniversary as an opportunity to remember the past while looking forward to building a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future.One of the highlights of the commemoration was the opening of new community facilities at the Gelagela resettlement site. These include ward halls at Rabuana, Rapolo, Malex 2, Iawakaka, and Matalau, as well as a police post, a mediation hall, and a new fitness and training centre.Governor Marum described the ward halls as the “ward parliaments” of their communities, emphasizing their importance as spaces where residents can gather, hold meetings, raise issues, discuss priorities, and plan local development.He highlighted the vital role of grassroots development, stating, systems at the community level must be strengthened to allow development in the province. The governor further stated that the ward is where government meets the people, and the ward hall must become a place where voices are heard, and decisions are made.Governor Marum encouraged ward leaders, women, youth, churches, and community organizations to utilize these facilities actively, transforming them into centres of community participation and decision-making. He also acknowledged the contributions of local volunteers from Gelagela, who helped construct the new fitness and training centre, illustrating that development is a collective effort.“Our people must also take ownership of development. Government support is essential, but community effort is what drives real progress. The fitness and training centre is a prime example of what can happen when government and community work hand in hand,” Governor Marum said.He further stressed that the facility would serve as a platform for young people to develop sporting, fitness, and personal skills, creating positive pathways for the next generation.Reflecting on the history of Rabaul since 1994, Governor Marum described resilience as the defining trait of the community.“We must not simply rebuild what was lost; we must build forward. East New Britain Province has suffered another tragic sea accident, just two months after a major loss of life at sea. Sometime during the afternoon of Saturday, 19th September, a boat carrying 14 passengers capsized while travelling to the Duke of York Islands.According to the East New Britain Police report, the vessel overturned near Pidgin Island— approximately the same location of the devastating July 18th maritime disaster. At this stage, It is currently unclear whether the vessel departed from Kokopo Beach or Tropicana Wharf. Rescue efforts have recovered four survivors yesterday, with one passenger confirmed deceased this morning who was recovered at Korere SSM. Police Patrol Vessel (PPV) Manning was deployed by the Royal PNG Constabulary this morning to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operation.Throughout the morning, the PPV Manning located and rescued two females clinging to rocks at the base of a steep cliff at 1016 hours. These individuals were successfully brought aboard the vessel and are now receiving medical attention. They were subsequently transported to Atham Wharf, where disaster response teams facilitated medical treatment.At approximately 1116 hours, the PPV Manning encountered a banana boat in distress that had located two very small children and an adult male. With assistance from the MV Mira Spirit, the two young children, one of whom was in a severely weakened state, were transferred onto the PPV Manning for urgent medical care.The vessel then proceeded to transfer the two women from earlier along with the two children to Atham Wharf, where they were met by disaster response personnel and transferred to Nonga Hospital for immediate treatment.In addition, the banana boat involved in the rescue managed to recover two adult males from a cove nearby and transported them to Atham Wharf for medical assessment as well.As of 1330 hours, both the PPV Manning and MV Mira Spirit resumed search operations, focusing on locating the remaining four passengers believed to still be missing.The East New Britain Provincial Disaster Agency has confirmed the official toll: nine rescued, one deceased, and four missing. Local authorities have stated they are fully committed to continuing the search until all individuals are accounted for.

The Gulf Provincial Government has taken a firm stance ahead of upcoming negotiations on the Papua LNG project, demanding a 95-5 split share at the state level and calling for immediate action on critical funding and welfare issues.Acting Governor Morris Taudevin outlined these key positions during the Papua LNG Development Forum held on Tuesday, 15 September, at the Rita Flynn Indoor complex, in Port Moresby.Taudevin stressed that Gulf Province’s position was developed through extensive consultations with affected landowners and communities, not unilaterally decided in Port Moresby. These consultations concluded just last week, ensuring that the province’s stance accurately reflects the voices of those communities directly impacted by the project.Drawing on past resource development experiences, particularly the PNG LNG project, Taudevin highlighted the importance of avoiding previous mistakes.Taudevin emphasized that the province’s core principles are very clear.“No pipeline policy. The pipeline must not be routed through Gulf Province unless accompanied by guarantees of benefits and safeguards.”“No repetition of past mistakes. The province insists on avoiding delays, unmet promises, and inadequate community participation that marred previous projects like the PNG LNG.”“Maximum benefit for the people. Development must lead to tangible improvements in infrastructure, health, education, and economic opportunities for Gulf communities,” stated Taudevin.He stressed that these principles are non-negotiable, and the province’s technical assessment supports a 95-5 split share at the state level as its fair and justified position.“This figure is final and represents a key component of the province’s comprehensive stance,” said Taudevin.A major concern raised at the forum was the chronic lack of funding and welfare support from the national government and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). Despite a three-month extension granted for Gulf Landowners to conduct consultations, they have yet to receive the K30 million Kina in delayed funding promised to facilitate participation in the process.This shortfall has led to inconsistent allowances and payments to landowners, disruptions in meals and accommodation at project camps, lack of clear protocols for medical care, referrals, and emergency responses and reports of deaths and ongoing illnesses among participants.The Gulf Acting Governor condemned these issues as violations of human dignity and governance standards. He stressed that the lack of proper support devalues the participation of landowners and communities, undermining the credibility of the entire forum.Before submitting its formal position, paper or allowing further stakeholder presentations, Taudevin demanded concrete, on-the-record commitments from the NPA and national government, including, immediate release of the K30 million Kina in outstanding funding, clear welfare arrangements covering allowances, accommodations, meals, and health services.The Acting Governor made it plain and clear that the province would not proceed with formal submissions or further engagement until these fundamental needs are addressed. The province’s willingness to negotiate remains, but only under fair, transparent, and properly resourced conditions.Taudevin challenged national leaders and project facilitators, emphasizing that a project of such national importance must be adequately funded by the national government.He questioned why, despite directives from the Prime Minister, funds had not been released and criticized the Minister for Kerema and Finance Minister, Thomas Opa, for withholding support.He further argued that the unresolved issues threaten to turn the forum into a source of frustration rather than a genuine development opportunity.While reaffirming Gulf Province’s readiness to collaborate on the Papua LNG project, Taudevin emphasized that this commitment is conditional on fair treatment, inclusive processes, and transparency.“Gulf province stands prepared to work with the national government, project proponents, and stakeholders, but only if partnership is reciprocal,” concluded Acting Governor, Taudevin.The message was clear that Gulf Province will not move forward without tangible responses on funding and welfare support. The success of the forum and the project depends not only on agreements but on how well the people involved are treated and respected.

Kairuku District marked the country's 51st Independence Day celebrations with a vibrant flag-raising ceremony, traditional cultural performance, live music and lots of fun games at the Bereina station, Central province.The event was a reflection on the district's journey, achievements, and aspirations for the future.In his Independence message to the people, Member for Kairuku and Minister for Energy, Peter Namea Isoaimo expressed his gratitude to the people of Kairuku and highlighted the significance of Independence celebration.“We are gathered here today to celebrate 51 years of independence, organized through the efforts of the three Local Level Governments (LLGs) of Kairuku, Mekeo, and Kuni,” he stated.He acknowledged the recent busy schedule, noting that he had missed much of the festivities, including the Central Music Festival and Arts organized by the Central Governor and the organizing committee, due to his ministerial duties abroad.“Last week, I was in Beijing, China, and also spent a few days in Singapore before returning yesterday morning. Today, I chose to be here with our people, and I am very happy to be part of this celebration,” he added.The leader reflected on the progress made over the past five decades, emphasizing the importance of development in various sectors. He cited transportation as a key example, recalling the challenges faced by early residents.“In the 1960s and 70s, travel was arduous. People travelled by sea or on rafts along the Angabanga river to reach Yule Island, which was then the colonial headquarters. Over time, infrastructure improved, including the construction of the Hiratano Highway before independence, which was a significant milestone,” reflected Minister Isoaimo.He also reminisced about the transportation evolution, flying into Bereina via a DC3 aircraft and enjoying the development of roads and motor transportation, which increased mobility and access.“Many younger generations may not have seen these changes unfold, but they are part of our progress," he remarked.Education and health sectors also saw improvements, though he acknowledged the need for continued development.“Our people were educated by missionaries and the colonial government, and many Kairuku served as senior public servants, diplomats, and departmental heads. Unfortunately, that trend has waned over the past 20 years, and we must work harder to improve education and health infrastructure, which are aging and in need of upgrades,” Isoaimo said.On economic development, he encouraged local entrepreneurship through MSMEs and SMEs, emphasizing that perseverance and courage are vital.“While we have faced setbacks, there is nothing preventing us from rising again and moving forward,” he asserted.Minister Isoaimo also commended law enforcement agencies and the efforts made to maintain peace. He said, their hard work over the past year, has resulted in a decline in law and order issues in the District.He also highlighted the role of the district administration and sports departments in engaging youth through sporting activities, which help divert them from engaging in use of illicit substances.“Development requires collective effort and a change in attitude. It is our mindset and collective effort that will drive positive change," he stressed.The Minister also highlighted recent national achievements. He mentioned the road trip by Prime Minister James Marape and his entourage, who travelled through Kairuku and onto the Trans-national highway to open new infrastructure projects, including a four-lane road from Lae to Nadzab, and facilities at the University of Goroka.“Let us remain positive and continue doing what is right, as expected by God and our country. May many good things come our way,” concluded Minister Isoaimo.

East New Britain PPC – Chief Superintendent Amanda Kates, has provided detailed insights into two major incidents that kept the community and the police busy over the Independence Anniversary period.According to PPC Kates, at around 8:15am on Tuesday morning (15 September), a group of eight-armed men robbed the BNBM Warehouse in Rabaul. They were armed with bush knives, three homemade firearms, and a flare gun. Prior to the robbery, the offenders had earlier stolen a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number HAT 739, which they used to travel to Rabaul to carry out the robbery.PPC Kates said that the offenders stormed the warehouse and attacked the Branch Manager. The Branch Manager was attacked with bush knifes causing serious injuries to his head and hand. He was evacuated to Port Moresby to receive specialized medical treatment. Aside from the manager, no other staff members were injured during the incident.“The suspects stole two boxes of brand-new Samsung mobile phones and five individual phones from the staff. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at K20,000. No other property was reported stolen,” said Kates."The police assisted by security personnel from NKCL pursued the Land Cruiser to Tovuru. However, the offenders fled into the nearby bushes and are still at large." “We are appealing to the families and friends of the suspects to come forward and notify us of their whereabouts. The injured offenders require urgent medical attention, and we urge the community to assist us in bringing them to justice,” said Chief Superintendent Kates.Moreover, ENB police were kept busy from 15 to 16 September managing the community events, especially the return of Gurias with the DEM Cup and Independence Day celebrations.Kates said, the community at large celebrated with enthusiasm and respectfully, with nil reports of any major incidents at organized events within the communities of Rapindik, Kokopo, Warangoi and Kerevat.“Unfortunately, a few individuals engaged in excessive alcohol consumption, which led to fights and disorderly conduct. These disturbances, especially near Kabakaul, kept our officers busy into the early hours of this morning. We intervened swiftly to restore order and ensure public safety,” said PPC Kates.The police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the robbery suspects to come forward and assist in their apprehension.Meanwhile, the community's cooperation during celebrations was commended by PPC Kates as police in the province will continue their efforts to maintain peace and ensure community safety.

As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate its 51st Independence Anniversary, concerns over ongoing corruption highlight the challenges the nation faces in achieving sustainable growth and development.In his Independence message, ICAC Acting Commissioner Don Sawong emphasizes that building a stronger, fairer PNG requires collective responsibility and unwavering commitment to integrity.Commissioner Sawong reflects on the nation’s journey, noting that Papua New Guinea declared independence 51 years ago amid hope for a brighter future.Despite remarkable progress, many citizens have become professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, and infrastructure development has advanced, but corruption remains a significant obstacle.He explains that corruption diverts public resources, denies opportunities to the needy, and hampers essential services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.He stresses that fighting corruption is a shared duty.“This is not just a government issue; it’s about every Papua New Guinean standing up for integrity and accountability,” Sawong asserts.He urged citizens to reject bribery, avoid using personal connections for unfair advantages, and refuse to support dishonest practices just because they benefit someone they know.He further calls on citizens to uphold integrity in their daily lives, highlighting the importance of individual choices.“Sometimes integrity requires courage. It means saying no when everyone else is saying yes. It means refusing to take what does not belong to us and doing the right thing even when nobody is watching. These small choices shape our nation’s future,” he explains.The commissioner emphasizes that these everyday decisions collectively influence PNG’s development, and the role of public officials and political leaders are critical to the country’s progress in growth and development.“When we accept public office, we accept a duty to serve. We must build it. Our founding fathers gave us independence. The responsibility to build on that legacy now lies with us. One day, we will pass this country to the next generation.
