TWO DEAD, HOMES BURNED IN VIOLENT CLASH
Tension is still high in Madang’s Nagada area after two men were killed and several homes were torched during a violent clash between community groups last weekend.
Madang’s Acting Police Chief, Superintendent Robert Baim, said the trouble began on Saturday night when two drunk men allegedly tried to rob a family. One of them, 26-year-old Russel Samson, was stabbed and died from his injuries. His accomplice was injured and is now in custody.
Word of Samson’s death sparked revenge. A group from a nearby settlement travelled to Nagada early Sunday morning, armed with bush knives and iron rods. They attacked the community, burning down homes and damaging gardens.
In the chaos, 45-year-old Moses Kela, an innocent bystander walking home, was attacked and killed.
“This man had nothing to do with the earlier fight,” said Baim. “His death was a tragic and senseless act.”
Police responded quickly, arresting several people, including the man believed to have led the attack. Five more were picked up in a follow-up raid at Gagasi Lagoon on Tuesday, bringing the total arrests to seven.
Police are urging locals to stay calm as investigations continue.
“We need peace right now. Let the police do our job,” said Baim, also warning evicted settlers not to return to the land they were removed from.
Police officers remain in the area to monitor the situation closely.

FORMER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL ARRESTED FOR FRAUD
Madang police have arrested Francis Kumo, the former principal of Aiom Anglican Secondary School, on charges of abuse of office and misappropriation of school funds.
This action follows a formal complaint lodged in 2024 by teachers and school board members, alleging Kumo misused funds and engaged in fraudulent activities from 2018 to 2024.
Despite no longer holding the principal position, Kumo reportedly continued to access the school's operating account. In February 2025, he allegedly withdrew K21,000 without authorization from the school chairman or administration. Investigators also noted a suspicious payment of K4,600 to HF Trading Limited for fuel, which school officials could not account for.
The financial mismanagement has severely impacted the school, leading to food shortages and a lack of essential supplies, ultimately causing classes to suspend in 2024 and infringing on students' right to education.
Search warrants have been executed for financial records from 2018 to 2024, aiming to uncover further irregularities, including transactions with vendors like BMBM Hardware for undelivered materials.
Madang Provincial Police Commander Acting Superintendent Robert Baim confirmed the arrest, stating, “The former principal was arrested at the Anglican Church premises in Madang town on Sunday, 2nd March 2025. He is currently in custody facing charges under the PNG Criminal Code Act for Fraudulent Appropriation of Power and Misappropriation of Property.”
Baim emphasized the importance of integrity in public service, urging officials to serve the community with respect. The investigation remains ongoing, and police encourage anyone with information to come forward.
Kumo, 49, hails from Monega Village in Sine Local Level Government, Chuave District of Chimbu Province, and remains in custody as inquiries continue.

WAU-WARIA DELAYS PUSH AHEAD DESPITE DELAYS
Road upgrades in the Wau-Waria District are moving forward, even with ongoing issues.
Local MP Marsh Narewec said the district is serious about building better road access because the roads will help people reach vital services like clinics, schools, and markets.
He said they want to bring real development, not just talk.
“We want progress — not only power, but also roads, education, communication, and health,” Narewec said.
The main project stretches over 30 kilometers from Bapi to Garaina Station. Other sections include a 6-kilometre road from Tori to Korua. The Biaru Kunai to Tourins Bypass is 3 kilometers long. Travelling from Wau to Biaru now takes about two hours.
The district has invested K3 million to fund this roadworks.
The roads will eventually link to the Northern Highway. This will allow better connection between Morobe and Gulf provinces through the Biaru-Gulf route once it is completed.
But progress has not been easy. Narewec said workers have faced threats and land ownership disagreements.
“Sometimes we stop work because of disputes or criminal activity,” he said. “But we continue because our people deserve these services.”
The road crew includes 20 to 25 workers. This team has engineers, drivers, police, and security officers. A second group of 15 is focused on the Warakawar stretch.
“They are not waiting for others — they are cutting bush, digging, and working with tools,” said Narewec.
He asked communities to cooperate and support the work being done.
“Respect the workers and protect the projects,” he said. “We must maintain peace and support local businesses along the road.”
He also thanked the team on the ground for their hard work in unsafe areas.
Narewec said this road is more than just a road.
“It means better lives. It brings education, health, trade, and hope,” he said.
This roadworks is part of the district’s efforts to boost growth and link remote villages.

MURDER SUSPECT SURRENDERS TO POLICE IN MADANG
A man wanted for willful murder has finally surrendered to Madang police after escaping from custody and hiding for some time.
Mr. Jerrord Manasai, also known as Comens, turned himself in to the Madang Transnational Crimes Unit on Monday March 31st, 2025.
Madang Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim confirmed the surrender, stating that Mr. Manasai had been on the police wanted list for almost for some time.
“He was involved in a 2019 murder case and later escaped from custody in 2024,” Baim said. “His surrender brings relief to police and the community.”
Manasai, 29, was accused of killing David Sole at Wagol Pikus. He was among three suspects arrested and detained at Beon Correctional Institution before escaping on April 4, 2024.
One suspect, Isaack Jack (Iceman), was killed in 2020, while another, Jeremiah George (Maia), had already surrendered.
Baim said Manasai’s surrender was due to pressure from police, community leaders, and his family.
“He realized there was no way out,” Baim said. “We thank those who helped in getting him to surrender.”
Manasai remains in police custody and will be charged with murder and escaping from custody.
Baim also encouraged other fugitives who are still on the run to turn themselves in.
“It’s better to surrender and face the law than to keep running,” he said.

MAJOR DRUG BUST IN MOROBE
Police in Menyamya District of Morobe province have busted a major drug trade, seizing 47kg of marijuana and arresting six suspects in a targeted operation.
The illegal drugs are estimated to be worth between K40,000 and K50,000 on the streets.
The suspects were caught on March 30th when police intercepted a vehicle carrying 12 bags of marijuana. The six men, all from Hanjua Village, had been under police surveillance for weeks.
Menyamya Acting Police Station Commander, Sergeant George Gambu, said the operation was a major success in the fight against drugs.
“This is a big win for us,” he said. “We are committed to stopping drugs from destroying our communities.”
He also stressed the importance of cooperation between police and the public.
“We need the community’s help to fight drug-related crimes,” he said. “If you see or hear anything suspicious, report it to us.”
Authorities believe the drugs were destined for major urban centers like Port Moresby and Kerema. Investigations are ongoing to uncover others involved in the trafficking network.
This latest drug bust follows a similar operation last year in which six men were arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Police say they will continue their crackdown to keep communities safe.

UNEXPLODED BOMB DISCOVERED AFTER ARSON ATTEMPT IN MADANG
Madang police have removed an unexploded bomb found outside Lae Builders Company (LBC) following an attempted arson.
Unknown individuals placed the bomb inside three car tires piled up on each other and tried to ignite it in the early hours of April 1, 2025. A security guard and a local resident spotted smoke around 6:00am, extinguished the fire, and alerted authorities.
Madang Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, said the device could have caused major destruction.
“If it had exploded, it could have damaged buildings and injured people,” Baim said.
The PNG Defense Force (PNGDF) safely removed the old-World War Two 105mm high-explosive projectile and disposed of it 25 kilometers out at sea.
Police have identified suspects and warned they will be arrested under the Counter-Terrorism Act.
“Madang is too small to hide. Surrender now,” Baim warned.
Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity.

MUSICIAN'S FIGHT AGAINST CANCER: A CALL FOR HELP
Popular PNG musician Daniel Bilip is facing a tough battle with tongue cancer, a disease that has changed his life.
It all started with a sore on his tongue that lasted for over three months. After a long wait for test results, Daniel was diagnosed with cancer in January.
"I never thought it was cancer, just thought it was from chewing betel nut and smoking," Daniel said.
"It’s been hard for me, as a musician, to accept this."
Since the diagnosis, Daniel has been going through chemotherapy, which makes it painful for him to eat and hard to keep up with daily routines. Losing his voice has been especially difficult for him.
Doctors suggest Daniel get a specific kind of treatment called Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), but this treatment is not available in PNG. The only option here is a less effective therapy, which has lower chances of success. His doctors recommend that he seek treatment abroad, but the cost is extremely high.
"Times are tough, and I cannot afford the treatment by myself," Daniel shared.
"I’m asking for help from the government, NGOs, or anyone who can contribute. Every bit of help counts."
Beyond his own fight, Daniel hopes that PNG will improve its healthcare system, so others won’t have to leave the country for necessary treatments.
"PNG can improve its healthcare system," he said.
"If we invest in better cancer care, we can save lives here at home."
Daniel’s message to others: “If you feel sick, don’t wait too long to see a doctor. Early treatment can save lives.”
Daniel Bilip is fighting hard, but he needs help to afford life-saving treatment. Any support from the public will make a difference in his battle against cancer.

NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL SET FOR 2026
The government’s vision for healthcare in Papua New Guinea focuses on lasting solutions that address the country’s needs for skilled professionals and better services and the proposed new medical school is one way to addressing this.
Health Minister Elias Kapavore announced that a new medical school will be established at the University of Papua New Guinea next year, aimed at tackling the critical shortage of healthcare workers.
Kapavore stressed that the new medical school will train future doctors, nurses, and healthcare specialists to meet the growing demands of the population. He urged that Provincial Health Authorities (PHAs), and CEOs align their strategies with this vision to ensure the long-term success of the healthcare system.
This medical school is just one part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen the health sector. By investing in education and building a strong foundation of skilled professionals, the government is working to ensure that future generations will have the knowledge and expertise to continue improving healthcare services for all Papua New Guineans.
In addition to education, Kapavore highlighted the role of partnerships with organizations like Kumul Petroleum Holdings (KPHL) and the Australian government. These collaborations have already made significant contributions to improving infrastructure and healthcare delivery across the country.
Through these efforts, the government aims to create a sustainable and effective healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of all citizens, both today and in the years to come.

HEALTHCARE WORKERS GOING ABOVE & BEYOND| KAPAVORE
Healthcare workers in Papua New Guinea are going above and beyond in their duties, even in the most difficult situations.
In Morobe province, some workers are carrying esky coolers up mountain paths to deliver antenatal care to expectant mothers, showing their dedication to those in need.
Health Minister Elias Kapavore acknowledged the hard work and perseverance of these workers, stating, “Some staff are carrying eskies up and down mountains to provide antenatal care for mothers. We must not give up—Papua New Guinea is our country, and together, we will build a better future.”
This dedication is closely tied to the government’s overall healthcare goals. Kapavore highlighted that the Marape-Rosso government is fully committed to enhancing healthcare services for all citizens.
“The government is here to support you in every way possible,” he affirmed.
The government has invested heavily in healthcare, with plans for new medical facilities, more healthcare workers, and better working conditions. These efforts demonstrate the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the health system and supporting those working on the frontlines.
With the combined efforts of dedicated healthcare workers and strong government support, there is optimism that the healthcare system will continue to improve, ensuring better care for all Papua New Guineans.

TWO ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER IN MADANG
Two men have been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a violent confrontation at the DCA Compound in Madang on March 13th left a local man with severe injuries.
The suspects, Jonathan Noie (30) and Samuel Noie (25), both from the Yakamul village in Aitape, West Sepik Province, allegedly attacked Michael Yani, a resident of Ward 18, Madang Urban.
Police reports the altercation began after Yani’s children informed him that Samuel Noie, who was allegedly intoxicated, had been swearing and dragging a bush knife along their fence. When Yani confronted the suspect, an argument broke out, leading to a violent attack.
Samuel Noie allegedly threw his bush knife at Yani but missed. As Yani attempted to chase him, Jonathan Noie reportedly picked up the weapon and struck Yani on the head and ear. Yani, realizing he was outnumbered, retreated to his home, but the two suspects followed him and continued the assault, slashing his arms, back, and wrist.
The case was reported to police, and the two suspects were detained at Jomba Police Station. They were formally arrested and charged with Attempted Murder under Section 304 of the PNG Criminal Code Act, Chapter 262.
Madang Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, confirmed the arrests and said police are treating the matter seriously.
“This was a brutal attack that could have easily turned fatal. We will ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law. I commend my officers for their swift response in apprehending the suspects,” Baim said.
He further urged the public to report any criminal activities and warned against escalating disputes through violence.
“The use of bush knives in conflicts is a growing concern. We encourage communities to resolve disputes peacefully and seek police intervention when necessary."
"I am calling upon people to change for a better tomorrow," said PPC Baim.
The two suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Police have assured the public that they will continue cracking down on violent crimes in the province.

LAE COMMUNITY REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO PEACE
The Assmambu community, located at Lae city's back road, held a restoration ceremony just recently, marking a renewed effort to combat crime and foster unity.
The event was attended by Lae Police Chief Inspector James Luan and members of the Back Road community.
The ceremony signified a commitment to strengthen local ward structures and encourage collaboration between the community, the newly appointed Assmambu Chairman, and Ward 12 Councilor. The Lae District Peace & Good Order Committees (LDPGOC) also pledged their support to enhance security and stability in the region.
LDPGOC Chairman, Yaxs Tugula highlighted the significance of community involvement in ensuring a safer environment for all.
"Despite the challenges we've faced in the past, we now have a chance to come together and transform the image of Assmambu. Every community member plays a part in reporting crime and supporting peace efforts. This is the only way to create a peaceful environment for our families," Tugula said.
Chief Inspector Luan praised the initiative and underscored the importance of cooperation between law enforcement and the local community.
"Making Assmambu and Back Road safer isn't solely the responsibility of the police. Everyone needs to step up, report crimes, and collaborate with peace committees. A united community is our strongest deterrent to crime," Luan stated.
A community spokesperson called on the new Assmambu Chairman to implement strategic plans aimed at removing the area's reputation as a crime hotspot. The ceremony concluded with a shared commitment to change the mindset of the community and set an example for younger generations.
Ahi LLG Ward 10 Councilor, Wenti Mineva also emphasized the need for establishing By-Laws in collaboration with the Assmambu community and local landowners.
"Anyone who breaches these By-Laws will face strict eviction from Lae City, those who cannot live peacefully will be sent back to their place of origin," Mineva stated.

INMATES ESCAPE FROM POLICE HOLDING CELL IN LAE
Nineteen (19) escapees are still at large in the Morobe province following a daring escape from a police station in the city of Lae, the country's industrial hub.
Initially, twenty (20) inmates escaped from the Lae Central Police Station cell this week after cutting through a wire barrier using a smuggled axel. Authorities have since recaptured one escapee near the oil market downtown, while 19 remain at large.
Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban confirmed the breakout and suggested that the escape was probably planned over some time.
“The axel was smuggled into the cell and used to cut through the wire barriers. It was not a one-night job—it took time before they made their move,” Kunyanban said.
He added that the breakout occurred between midnight and 2 p.m., during a shift change.
“Our officers were on duty, but cell checks are conducted at two-hour intervals. The inmates knew the routine and used that window to escape,” he explained.
Kunyanban also raised concerns about the overcrowded and outdated detention facility, a cause for concern for police as it poses risks of disease outbreaks and breakouts.
“The cells were originally built to hold around 60 to 70 detainees, but we now house more than 100 at a time. It’s clear that we need better infrastructure to prevent such incidents,” he said.
Police are verifying the names and charges of the escapees before releasing further details. Kunyanban has urged the public to assist in locating the fugitives, emphasizing that their recapture is a matter of public safety.
The investigation into how the axel was smuggled in and whether security lapses contributed to the escape, is ongoing.
