ALEX JOHNSTON’S ARRIVAL CARRIES MORE THAN A LEGACY

Alex Johnston’s arrival in the country carried more than milestones and records because it also reflected the future direction of rugby league in PNG.

The NRL’s all-time leading try scorer landed at Jacksons International Airport on Monday, May 25, as part of the Lae Biscuit Company ambassador engagement program alongside South Sydney Rabbitohs teammates Sean Keppie and Peter Mamouzelos.

Beyond the appearances and fan engagement, Johnston’s visit reflects his growing role in the foundation of the PNG Chiefs franchise as player 002 and the pathway now opening for young talent across the country.

Speaking at the arrival press conference at Jacksons International Airport terminal, Johnston said wearing the Chiefs jersey in 2028 would add another layer to his legacy.

“Hopefully I can get the 250 tries and in the Chiefs jersey as well. That would be special to represent this country not just through the Kumuls but now with the Chiefs as well,” he said.

“If I get to 250 tries, that is a goal. Hopefully finish my career on a high.”

While Johnston’s records continue to grow in the NRL, his message during the visit remained heavily focused on the next generation of talent emerging from PNG.

“I know firsthand what this country can produce in terms of talent and the love that the kids have for the sport,” he said.

For Johnston, the Chiefs represent more than another rugby league club entering the competition because they also represent opportunities for local players and communities.

“Hopefully creating a pathway for them to make the NRL, not just rugby league but outcomes outside of sport benefiting the community.”

With the Chiefs now officially on the horizon, Johnston also had a message for young players dreaming of reaching the NRL.

“Work hard and do your best. The dream is not that far away, it is just here, so the eyes are on you.”

Despite approaching the later stages of his career, Johnston said he still feels capable of continuing beyond his current contract.

“I wanted to sign for two years but I just signed for one so far. At the moment I feel like I have a lot to give,” he said.

“I would love to keep playing as long as I can.” Johnston also spoke about the importance of bringing teammates into PNG so they can experience the culture and community firsthand.

“I like to bring the boys across to experience PNG, see the lay of the land and give back to the community,” he said.

He also pushed back against outside perceptions surrounding safety in the country, saying his experiences here have always been positive.

“The safety is not my concern at all. Everyone is welcoming; they just want photos and signatures. I have never seen anything like that,” he said.

The Rabbitohs winger also revealed a personal goal to East Sepik Governor Allan Bird, who was present at the press conference, saying he wanted to reconnect more deeply with his Sepik roots during future visits.

“I would love to go out there and meet the kids and try to be a positive influence and actually experience where my family is from,” he said.

While welcoming AJ, Governor Bird acknowledged his impact on rugby league in the Sepik region and congratulated him on his record-breaking achievement in the NRL.

“AJ, congratulations man. You’re a big hit around the country and everyone wants to share in your achievements,” Bird said.

“We’re really pleased to have you here again and we look forward to what you’re going to do over the next couple of days with the community.”

The ambassador engagement program was organised by John Chow Lae Biscuit Company Managing Director, who thanked Johnston for continuing to promote PNG on the international stage while proudly carrying his roots.

“This time is extra special because AJ has broken the all-time scoring record in the NRL,” Chow said.

“Lae Biscuit is very grateful to have him on board as a brand ambassador. He’s always promoting PNG on the highest level and introducing PNG to his teammates and family.”
